Useful Information About Granite

The Origin
Granite is a form of igneous rock. This means that granite is molded out of magma. Such volcanic rock is famed to be one of the hardest and densest rocks in the world. Due to the extreme heat and pressure applied to the surface, granite came into being.

Classification
Scientists have subdivided granite into various classifications:

1. The I-type, which stands for igneous protolith granite, and the S-type, which stands for sedimentary protolith granite. Both classifications are created as a result of the melting of optimum grade metamorphic rocks, some other granite rocks, or longtime buried sediments.

2. Through the course of time, another classification of granite has been added, and that is the M-type or what is known as the mantle-derived granite. This type of granite is sourced out from mafic magmas stored in the mantle. The mantle derived granites are basically those that have already been crystallized. This division is rare since it is quite difficult for the fractional crystallization of basalt into granite form to materialize.

3. The A-type, or the anorogenic granites, are created out of the so-called hot spot activities. Too dry conditions in the lower crust prompts the formation of these granites. Scientists admit that this granite classification contains an extraordinary root of mineralogy and geochemistry.

Granites Use in Antiquity

Proof of granites use is greatly exemplified by the reputed pyramids of Ancient Egypt, including the Red Pyramid, Menkaures Pyramid, Great Pyramid of Giza, and the Black Pyramid. Experts still argue as to how the Egyptians dating centuries back were able to utilize the solid granite to build their pyramids.

Application

Granite has vividly entered modernitys scenery. These stones are widely employed as dimension stones, foundations of walls, flooring tiles, kitchen countertops, and curling rocks. Being one of the hardest and densest rocks, granite is extensively making its own name in the world of residential, commercial, and industrial constructions capitalizing on its high durability and aesthetic characteristics alone.
